with Jack Purcell and Nathan Graham Davis,
creators of Malice and Mistletoe
Veteran DC and Marvel comic book inker and artist Jack Purcell will be making a guest appearance at That’s Entertainment (located at 244 Park Ave., Worcester, MA) on Saturday, December 10th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Appearing with Purcell will be author Nathan Graham Davis. Purcell and Davis will be signing purchased copies of their creator-owned graphic novel Malice and Mistletoe, a holiday-themed comic book story with a dark twist, intended for ages 18 and older. Jack Purcell will also draw a free character head sketch in every purchased copy of the book.
In his comic book career, Purcell has focused primarily on inking and has worked on various independent titles, as well as Heavy Metal magazine and a variety of titles for Marvel Comics and DC Comics. Titles that have featured his work include Guardians of the Galaxy, Gotham Underground, Teen Titans, Green Arrow, Detective Comics, Batman, Batwoman, Batgirl, and others. His most recent work can be seen in DC’s Batwoman issue #37.
The graphic novel’s author, Nathan Graham Davis, is also a screenwriter. He currently has a project in development with the production company 1984 Private Defense Contractors (producers of Dredd and The Grey). Davis says he hatched the concept for Malice and Mistletoe in early 2012 with the idea of bringing it to the movie screen. He recalls that the idea came as “a bit of midnight inspiration– the type that wills you out of bed to write it down.”
Davis worked up a rough draft, then sent it to his manager and friends in show business.
The basic premise is that an assassin is hired by Santa Claus to track down and kill the mythical Krampus after a series of grisly Thanksgiving murders. Davis says the overwhelming response was along the lines of: “No one in Hollywood will ever touch this. Ever. It's too dark. Too out-there. You don't mess with Christmas.” Reluctantly, Davis put the idea aside.
Around Christmas, 2013, Davis stumbled upon his original rough draft and felt that the idea deserved another look-- not as a movie, but in a medium that still depended heavily on visuals, the graphic novel. Davis searched online databases to find the right artist to make his vision a reality. He says he discovered there was an incredible, experienced inker living right in his hometown of Northampton, MA, and he immediately sent Purcell a message. The result is Malice and Mistletoe.
That’s Entertainment’s Marketing Coordinator Sorana Gatej says, “As kids we were worried about The Grinch, and now Krampus is making headlines. It seems that Santa’s got his hands full, but I have faith that love and kindness will prevail in the end.”
